Marco Andretti, driver of the No. 26 NYSE Group Andretti Green Racing IndyCar Series Honda, completed a full day of testing The Soul of American Road Racing today. Andretti was looking to improve his lap time and speed in preparation for the Watkins Glen Indy Grand Prix, June 2-4.
"I love this racetrack," said Andretti. "I really have fun with this place and there's a lot of history here with my family as well." Andretti is a third generation of race car drivers and celebrated his 19th birthday in March. He is a rookie in the IndyCar Series this year and made his track debut at Watkins Glen International during Corning 100 in 2005. He finished second behind Jeff Simmons, by only 0.6316 of a second. Simmons is also a rookie in the IndyCar Series this year taking over for Paul Dana in the No. 17 Rahal Letterman Racing Team Ethanol Honda.
He said today's goal was "looking for lap time and car balance" and "to go faster and faster." Although Andretti wouldn't provide his exact speed or lap times during today's test, he did mention that he had been faster than Dan Wheldon's qualifying time of 130.493 mph at The Glen in 2005.
Andretti got off to a rough start this season and did not finish the first two races due to mechanical issues, but is still the highest ranked rookie in the IndyCar Series standings coming in 12th during the Indy Japan 300. He is looking forward to the Indy 500 and the upcoming race at The Glen only seven days later. "I think we fixed the problem," stated Andretti. "Testing today has been good." He went on to explain that he is still a rookie and needs all of the track time that he can get. Andretti began testing at 9:30 AM this morning and concluded around 4:30 PM.
