Kurt Busch wins AAA Pole Day
Kurt Busch, driving the #2 Miller Lite Dodge, won the pole position for Sunday's AMD at The Glen with a speed of 122.966 mph. This makes it a season sweep of this year's road race poles on the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup circuit for the 2004 series champion. Dodge cars took the top three spots, with Kasey Kahne (#9 Dodge Dealers/UAW Dodge, 121.845 mph) and Ryan Newman (#12 Alltel Dodge, 121.642 mph) grabbing 2nd and 3rd. Team mates Jeff Gordon (#24 Dupont Chevrolet, 121.432 mph) and Jimmie Johnson (#48 Lowe's Chevrolet, 121.172 mph) round out the top 5 starting positions.
As the cut-off for the 2006 Chase for the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup looms, all of the drivers on the cusp of "The Chase" were intent on stepping up their performance. Tony Stewart, currently 9th in points and winner of 3 out of the last 4 races at The Glen, will start 8th. He could have been closer to the front had he not made an error coming out of the turn 9 Carousel. Dale Earnhardt Jr., currently 10th in points, will line up in the 11th starting position. Kasey Kahne, who has dropped to 11th in points, is hoping that a strong result at The Glen will catapult him back into the top 10 and a position in The Chase.
Unfortunately for Greg Biffle, who sits 12th in the point standings, he made contact with the guard rail, damaging his #16 National Guard/Subway Ford. He will be able to start the race 41st based on owner points.
As is usually the case at The Glen, some of the teams brought in road course specialists. NASCAR NEXTEL Cup regulars, however, held their own, as the hired guns, or "Road Course Warriors," could only muster a best of 13th by Scott Pruett (#40 Lonestar Steakhouse Dodge). Fan favorite Boris Said put his #60 SoBe/No Fear Ford in the 15th position. Ron Fellows (#32 Tide/Downy Chevrolet) lines up 18th and Brian Simo (#34 SoBe/No Fear/Dollar General Chevrolet) is 43rd.
