Four Years and Counting...
The Glen Continues to Host the Largest Vintage Event in the Country
The Zippo U.S. Vintage Grand Prix is still the largest vintage motorsports event in America for the fourth consecutive year. In 2003, the record was broken with a record 450 entries. In 2004, the MG's held the 50th Anniversary of the Collier Cup reunion having more than 540 entries. In 2005, the Zippo US Vintage Grand Prix had almost 500 entries. This weekend over 480 entrants will hit the track - marking the fourth year in a row that The Glen has hosted a vintage event of this magnitude. This highly-anticipated weekend combines the best in vintage racing on the 3.4-mile road course at The Soul of American Road Racing with a special tribute to the racing career of legend Derek Bell, one of the most accomplished and popular drivers in the history of international endurance sports car racing.
"We are excited to be able to round out another great year of racing at The Glen by celebrating our fourth consecutive year as the largest vintage racing event in America," stated Craig Rust, president of Watkins Glen International. "This event has always been a lot of fun for everyone to get together and celebrate the great history of WGI and motorsports. We are already working on 2007!"
"The drivers really love to compete at The Glen and it just gets bigger and bigger," stated Carl Jensen, Competition Director for SVRA. "The track history coupled with the downtown festival on Friday make this weekend a huge event for the fans and drivers."
The Zippo U.S. Vintage Grand Prix will also feature the 40th Anniversary of Can-Am and Trans-Am together for a weekend celebration. 27 Can-Am's will compete for the New York Governor's Cup on Sunday taking the green flag at 1:30 pm, while over 30 Trans-Am's will compete in a feature later that afternoon.
