Read for Speed Program Launches in Three Area Schools
Watkins Glen International and elementary schools in the Watkins Glen and Elmira City School Districts, dropped the green flag on February 26th to launch this year's "Read for Speed" reading program. This marks the third year that the highly successful reading program will run at Watkins Glen Elementary and the first year it will run at Fassett and Diven Elementary Schools in Elmira, NY. The program offers gift certificates from area businesses, exclusive track access and once in a lifetime opportunities at the track as rewards for reading comprehension and will run until May 25th.
Watkins Glen International initially launched the Read for Speed program at Watkins Glen Elementary in 2005. The program was paired with the school's Accelerated Reading (AR) program which was launched in the same year and met with great success over the last two years. Aside from tickets to the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series at The Glen or Watkins Glen Grand Prix weekends, WGE students will be awarded gift certificates from area businesses including Friendly's restaurant, Time-Out arcade and Regal Cinemas at the Arnot Mall in Big Flats, NY, and Johnny's Bowling Lanes in Watkins Glen, NY.
"We are grateful to Watkins Glen International for their generous rewards with those of many local venders," said Rodney Weeden, Principal of Watkins Glen Elementary. "The rewards are meant to give students that extra push to start reading more and hopefully carry the reading beyond the program."
This will be the first year that the Read for Speed program officially runs outside of Watkins Glen Elementary. The first grade classes at Washington Elementary in Elmira, NY, participated in a scaled down version of the program last year. Those classes moved to Fassett Elementary and will now participate in the entire program which includes the chance to win tickets to the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series at The Glen or Watkins Glen Grand Prix weekends.
"Read for Speed really energizes the kids and gets them reading," said Sarah Welliver, First Grade Teacher at Fassett Elementary. "I can't thank The Glen enough for all of the help and support they have given us. What a positive way to show the community you care."
The first grade classes at Diven Elementary will run the scaled down and unofficial version of the program this year. The students at each school will be rewarded for their reading with a Thunder Road bus trip around The Glen in June and gift certificates from area businesses such as Time-Out Arcade and Friendly's restaurant at the Arnot Mall, Rossi Bowling Lanes in Elmira, NY, and the Chemung County Buildings and Grounds operated aquatic facilities Harris Hill Pool and Park Station Waterfront.
The program also features a reading "Pit Stop" in April where individual classrooms can play racing games, hangout with Read for Speed mascot Max Traxx, check out the Official WGI Pace Car, and get their picture taken with a NASCAR Busch Series show car.
In 2006, the "fastest" students that read the most books at WGE won a trip to the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series weekend at The Glen in August for their entire family. One of the winning students got their picture taken in Gatorade Victory Lane with race winner Kevin Harvick! The "fastest" class attended an autograph session with the drivers of the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series during the Watkins Glen Grand Prix weekend.
Tickets for the entire 2007 season are on sale now! This includes the Sahlen's Six Hours of The Glen Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series, June 8-10, the return of open-wheel racing during the Watkins Glen Grand Prix, July 6-8, and the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup and Busch Series at The Glen, August 9-12.
