"The Race" is on at The Glen
Are you a fan of Watkins Glen International and want to hear the track PA announcers, MRN, PRN and IMS race broadcasts over the airwaves at the track? Well now you can do just that. Officials at both Watkins Glen International and Backyard Broadcasting announced an official partnership on Wednesday, June 25 that will allow track PA and commentary from the station to air on WRCE AM 1490 "The Race," beginning with next weekend's Camping World Grand Prix, July 4-6.
The face of "The Race" was unveiled during a press conference held at the track's new state-of-the-art media center, where a satellite broadcasting studio was also unveiled and is located on the building's second floor. The voice of the station, Chris P. Bacon, also considered a "Glen Expert" is a savvy race fan and began broadcasting at the track on sister stations WWLZ Wheels AM 820 and 100.9 "The Big Pig." The first guest to be featured on the new station was the track president, Craig Rust.
"We are thrilled to expand our partnership with Backyard Broadcasting and unveil WRCE to our fans as we continue to improve our guests' experiences when they are visiting the track," stated Rust, president of Watkins Glen International. "Because we have such a large facility, we know that this new partnership will keep our fans well informed. We are looking forward to working with Backyard Broadcasting as our official radio station for the next three years."
The station will simulcast programming from their FM station WPGI 100.9 "The Big Pig" when they are not coving racing events live from Watkins Glen International. The partnership covers four major race weekends at Watkins Glen International over the next three seasons including; The Sahlen's Six Hours of The Glen, The Camping World Grand Prix, The Centurion Boats at The Glen and Zippo 200 and the U.S. Vintage Grand Prix. WRCE is a Motor Racing Network (MRN), Performance Racing Network (PRN) and IMS Radio affiliate. Weather, track activities, schedule changes and additions will all be part of the station's programming.
"We at Backyard Broadcasting are very excited about this announcement," stated Margaret Tollner, vice president and general manager for backyard broadcasting. "It's a natural extension of the partnership that we have had with Watkins Glen International for many years."
Watkins Glen International owns almost 3,000 acres of land in Schuyler County and offers camping on the inside and outside of the race track. Several of those camping areas are not covered by the track PA feed. Fans can now tune-in to 1490 AM WRCE "The Race" to get the most up to date information while they are camping on-site. 1490 AM will cover the entire Watkins Glen region. WRCE's transmitter is located in Watkins Glen, and with the proximity of the signal, race fans will have the benefit of an extremely clear broadcast.
