As if the great racing wasn’t enough to attract fans to Watkins Glen International over the Independence Day weekend, now there is even more excitement. The pre-race activities prior to the green flag of the Camping World Grand Prix at The Glen will provide a variety of activities sure to keep everyone on the edge of their seat.

The afternoon will begin with racing as the Penn Grade 1 Historic Grand Prix takes place from 12:30 – 1:30 PM. The event will feature vintage F1 cars from the 1960s and 1970s; the same cars that helped make Watkins Glen synonymous with road racing.  After the race, non-stop action will continue leading up to the green flag of the Camping World Grand Prix at 3:45 PM.

For adventure junkies, there will be performances by skydivers and a bike team.  The Elk Creek Skydivers will stun fans as three skydivers jump out of an airplane carrying flags high above the 3.4-mile road course.  Fans who like speed will enjoy the motorcycle stunt bike performance by Team VastX. The two-man team will perform tricks for fans along the FrontStretch.

Music lovers can enjoy a performance by the Empire Statesmen, a drum and bugle corps based in Rochester, NY. The corps has received various honors, including being named a five-time World Champion by the Drum Corps Associates.

As a part of the Independence Day celebration, members of the Massachusetts Army National Guard will hold a re-enlistment ceremony. The ceremony will honor over 75 men and women who have recently extended their service to our country by renewing their contract with the Massachusetts division of the Army National Guard.

The Independence Day weekend pre-race ceremony will also include several activities as a special tribute to our country. The American and Canadian national anthems will be performed by Miss Watkins Glen International, Lindsay Clynne. Clynne was the runner up in the 2007 Atlantic City Motorsports Show and is now a member of the Speed Channel crew, helping out as a “Speed Girl” with on-site recordings. As Clynne performs the anthems, fans around the track will be presented our nation’s colors by color guards from the Army National Guard, Navy and Air Force.  Lastly, the fly-over is scheduled to be performed by four T-38 Talons of the 14th Flying Training Wing at the Columbus Air Force Base in Mississippi.
