Dario Franchitti scored his first career pole in his 16th NASCAR Nationwide start in qualifying for today's Zippo 200 at Watkins Glen International.
Franchitti went out in the ninth and final group in qualifying, and posted a fast lap of 121.327 mph. Today's 82-lap race will mark his second NASCAR start since losing his Sprint Cup ride in the first week of July.
"There's hasn't been to many up-points (on the season), but this is definitely one of them," Franchitti said. "I've got to thank Scott Pruett because he talked me around the track when I showed up here on Thursday.
"It's going to be interesting. We are at least starting at the right end of the field."
Robby Gordon captured his fourth top-five Nationwide start at WGI after he qualified second with 120.693 mph in his No. 55 Dodge.
Jimmie Johnson, who is making his second series start of the year, will start third, with Denny Hamlin and Brad Keselowski rounding out the top five.
