Fans can now begin planning their 2010 Independence Day holiday weekend at Watkins Glen International. Officials from the Indy Racing League (IRL) announced the 2010 IndyCar® Series Schedule today and confirmed that America’s premier open-wheel racing series will return to the twisted turns of Watkins Glen International during its traditional holiday weekend date. The 6th Annual Camping World Grand Prix at The Glen will take place July 2-4, 2010. Tickets will go on sale in November.
“We are thrilled to welcome the drivers, league, teams and our fans, back to our historic track on the 4th of July in 2010,” stated Michael Printup, president of Watkins Glen International. “While we were initially talking with the league about moving the date in 2010, it made the most sense for us to keep the race where it was and continue to build a new tradition for our race fans. We know we will be able to show our fans the same excitement that they have come to expect at Watkins Glen International, both on-and-off the track.”
“We are pleased to have Watkins Glen International as part of the 2010 IndyCar Series schedule. This year’s race proved to be one of the most exciting events of the year, with Justin Wilson giving Dale Coyne his first win in 25 years of competition,” stated Terry Angstadt, president of the commercial division for the Indy Racing League, sanctioning body of the IndyCar Series. “The open wheel history of the track combined with the challenges of the natural terrain road course makes The Glen a great fit for our diverse schedule.”
2010 will mark the fourth year that the track has hosted the IndyCar Series during the 4th of July holiday week. During this year’s Camping World Grand Prix at The Glen, Justin Wilson took the checkered flag for his first victory at Watkins Glen International, as well as his first win in IndyCar Series competition. Wilson celebrated his win at the storied racetrack with his car owner, Dale Coyne, who finally took home a trophy after more than 500 attempts. In addition to great racing from the
IndyCar Series, the weekend also featured heated competition from the Firestone Indy Lights, the F2000 Championship Series, and the SPEED World Challenge Series. On Saturday night, fans could choose from a variety of activities. They could watch the race live from Daytona International Speedway at the FrontStretch Viewing Party, enjoy a performance by the Presidents of the United States of America on the Red Cat Summer Stage, or be amazed as they watched the fireworks spectacular over the 3.4-mile road course. The weekend at The Glen was full of family fun, which was encouraged with FREE admission for Kids 12 and under with the purchase of an adult ticket.
Fans can expect some of the same great activities to celebrate the nation’s independence in 2010. There will be plenty of racing as several series are expected to take on the twists and turns of the 3.4-mile road course throughout the weekend. Tickets for the 2010 season are expected to go on sale in November.
Don’t miss the stars of the NASCAR Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series as they take on the twisted turns of Watkins Glen International in their final road-course race of the season, August 6 - 9. The DP and GT classes of the Rolex Sports Car Series return to The Glen to compete in the Crown Royal 200 on Friday night, followed by the Zippo 200 with the NASCAR Nationwide Series on Saturday afternoon. The weekend will culminate with the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series racing in the Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips at The Glen on Sunday afternoon.
