Mike Paz (left) has teamed with Jim Mueller for many years to handle the announing duties at WGI and numerous other ISC tracks. Paz will be the grand marshal for the Sahlen's Six Hours of The Glen this weekend.
Fans that visit Watkins Glen International each summer have come to expect Mike Paz’s booming voice over the public address speaker during pre-race ceremonies but he will play a different role this coming weekend. WGI is proud to announce that Paz will serve as the grand marshal for this weekend’s 29th Running of the Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen. He will not only be recognized during pre-race ceremonies but is scheduled to say the most famous words in racing “Drivers, start your engines!” just moments before the green flag drops on the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series race at 2:00 PM.
“Mike Paz and his voice are as synonymous with The Glen as our blue guardrail or famed esses,” said Michael Printup, president of Watkins Glen International. “Paz has been a member of the WGI family for many years and we are thrilled that he accepted the invitation to serve as our grand marshal. I have no doubt that our fans are just as excited as I am to hear him say the most famous words in racing on Saturday afternoon.”
“I first came to The Glen in 1969 and it has been a very large part of my life since then so being named grand marshal is a huge honor for me,” said Mike Paz. “Sending the field off will send chills up my spine and will be an incredible experience. I know a lot of the drivers personally so giving them the command to start engines at The Glen will be very special to me.”
"For many years, Mike Paz’s iconic voice has been a part of the race experience for race fans at The Glen for many years,” said Joe Sahlen, owner of Sahlen’s Packaging Company Inc. and title sponsor of the weekend’s GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series race. “It's a pleasure to honor him as the grand marshal for the Sahlen's Six Hours at the Glen and to hear him give the start your engines command to the drivers.”
Paz has quite an impressive resume that reaches much further than just Watkins Glen International and Upstate New York. He began his career as a motorsports announcer at New York Raceway Park in 1987. He expanded to numerous other asphalt and dirt ovals throughout Western New York before making his debut at WGI in 1997. Paz was just getting started in 1999 as he added a second International Speedway Corporation (ISC) facility to his list of tracks, Daytona International Speedway. His involvement with ISC tracks continued to grow over the years to include the announcing duties at Richmond International Raceway, Phoenix International Raceway, Auto Club Speedway, and Homestead-Miami Speedway. This collection of tracks meant Paz announced during events for some of the top series in the United States including all three of the top levels of NASCAR, the IZOD IndyCar Series, GRAND-AM, NHRA, ARCA, DIRT Motorsports, Whelen Modifieds, and World of Outlaws.
