Greg Biffle Leads the Way
Greg Biffle (#16 3M Ford) posted the fastest times in both practice sessions during Friday practice for the Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips at the Glen. Coming off a win in the most recent NASCAR race, Biffle was full of confidence as he took to the improved Watkins Glen International track. Greg turned a fast lap at 122.152mph in the first practice session. Denny Hamlin (#11 FedEx Freight Toyota) was marginally slower at 122.022mph. Paul Menard (#98 Pittsburgh Paints/Menards Ford), Jeff Burton (#31Caterpillar Chevrolet) and Kurt Busch (#2 Miller Lite/Vortex Dodge) rounded out the top 5. Biffle leads the way again in the afternoon session, turning a fast lap of 124.065mph. Former Formula One driver Juan Pablo Montoya (#42 Target Chevrolet) needed only 5 laps to post the second fastest lap of 123.807mph. Marcos Ambrose (#47 Little Debbie Toyota), who nearly won the season’s other NASCAR road course race, was third fastest at 123.755mph. 5-time Watkins Glen winner Tony Stewart (#14 Old Spice/Office Depot Chevrolet) posted the 6th fastest lap at 123.542mph. The NASCAR Sprit Cup Series cars will return to the track for qualifying on Saturday at 11:10am.
Drivers Love the SAFER Watkins Glen International
NASCAR Sprint Cup drivers raved about the safety improvements made to Watkins Glen International. “It will make for safer racing and better racing,” said Jeff Burton. Kevin Harvick remarked that the new asphalt run-off areas will help reduce the number of cautions as well as change fuel strategies. With fewer cars stuck in the sand, drivers won’t be able to count on as many late race cautions to help stretch your fuel mileage. Newly emboldened by the asphalt run-off areas, many drivers were glad not to have to be towed out of the sand traps as they slid off the racing line.
Carl Edwards Sets the Pace for Zippo 200
Carl Edwards (#60 Fastenal Ford) lead the way in final practice for Saturday’s Zippo 200 at Watkins Glen International. Edwards’ speed of 121.739mph bested Brad Keselowski’s (#22 Ruby Tuesday/Discount Tire Dodge) 121.442mph. 3-time Watkins Glen NASCAR Nationwide Series race winner Ron Fellows (#88 GT Vodka Chevrolet) turned a fast lap of 120.556mph. Kyle Busch (#18 Combos Toyota) and Kevin Harvick (#33 Jimmy John’s Chevrolet) rounded out the top 5. The NASCAR Nationwide Series cars will qualify for the Zippo 200 at 9:10am on Saturday.
