Don Terry (right) will will join WGI President Michale Printup (left) and NASCAR's biggest stars in Las Vegas for the NASCAR Awards Ceremony on Friday, December 3.
Don Terry was in attendance when, what is now, the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series made its return to historic Watkins Glen International in 1986. Little did the Big Flats, NY resident know that his interest in NASCAR and support of The Glen would eventually lead to the experience of a lifetime – an all expenses paid trip to Las Vegas for NASCAR Champion’s Week including the NASCAR Awards Ceremony at the Wynn Resort on Friday, December 3. Terry is the second recipient of this VIP experience, following in the footsteps of the 2009 winners Wayne and Judy Jock.
“It was a real thrill for me to be able to award this incredible experience to one of our great fans in person,” said Michael Printup, president of Watkins Glen International. “The excitement Don felt was clear as day to see on his face and through his reaction. We have some of the best fans in motorsports and having the ability to show our appreciation with two tickets to the NASCAR Awards Ceremony is absolutely fantastic.”
Terry was randomly selected among the fans that entered the “Be a Star at the NASCAR Awards Ceremony in Las Vegas” contest by posting the “Speed Thrills” renewal poster on their front doors. The retired salesman nervously waited to see if his door would be the one that Printup knocked on and when that knock did indeed come he opened the door, looked at the flashing lights on the top of the Toyota Camry Hybrid Pace Car and said, “Either I’m under arrest or I’m going to Vegas!” Luckily for him, and a guest of his choosing, it was the later but Terry seemed to already know he was going to be a winner when the day started.
“I had a premonition in the morning that I was going to win the trip,” said Terry. “I even told my friend that I was going to win and to help make sure I did that I was going to get six more posters to put on my garage door in case they missed the one on my door.”
Terry did not actually post the six posters but they would not have been necessary because the poster was placed proudly on the front door as instructed. The decision to enter was an easy one as he has been a long-time fan of The Glen after witnessing NASCAR’s return in 1986 and said that he keeps coming back because of the “excitement and atmosphere” found at WGI.
Terry and his guest will receive an once-in-a-lifetime experience that will undoubtedly not be soon forgotten. The package includes round-trip airfare from the Elmira-Corning Regional Airport to Las Vegas, a 4 night/3 day stay at the Wynn Las Vegas, 2 tickets to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Awards Ceremony, and $500 spending money.
