By: WGI Staff on 1/14/2011
The Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips at The Glen is one of the Top 10 races that the staff of SceneDaily.com and NASCAR Illustrated are looking forward to seeing in 2011.
Fans that have watched the Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips at The Glen race the last five or six years have been treated to some of the best racing since the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series returned to WGI in 1986. The constant door-to-door action, hard racing, and thrilling on-track action have become the norm at the historic road course and this has now been recognized by SceneDaily.com and NASCAR Illustrated. As part of their annual season preview, the staffs for the respected NASCAR-themed media outlets compiled a list of the Top-10 races they want to see in 2011 and The Glen was ranked 5th for the entire season. The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series returns to The Soul of America Road Racing for the 26th time on a new weekend, August 11-14.
Article author Jeff Owens explained that the Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips was ranked 5th because WGI “provides compelling action” and the fact that “the 11-turn course is fast and tough, leaving little margin for error.” Later in the article, Owens says, “NASCAR’s road courses have become the new short tracks; where bumper banging and door slamming have become the norm.” This is not news to fans that make their annual trek to Upstate New York to watch NASCAR’s best each August. The high speeds and numerous passing areas have regularly made The Glen the home to some of the best racing of the NASCAR season. Some of the highlights from the last several years include countless daredevil passes entering the Inner Loop, Kevin Harvick’s pass on then 2-time defending WGI champion Tony Stewart with three laps remaining in 2006, the on-track confrontation between Harvick and Juan Pablo Montoya in 2007, Marcos Ambrose’s charge from his 43rd starting position to finish 3rd in 2008, and hard side-by-side racing through the Esses following the implementation of double-file restarts in 2009. This is not the first time The Glen been recognized for its exciting racing as it was selected the best NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race by Sports Illustrated in 2007.
