Watkins Glen International Qualifying Record May Fall
NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Practice Speeds Challenge Jeff Gordon's 2003 Mark
Many races at WGI have been held in the rain over the years, but it would be the first time ever a NASCAR race had been run in such conditions at The Glen.
WATKINS GLEN, NY – The top 10 drivers in final practice for the Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips at The Glen smashed the track qualifying record set back in 2003 by four-time Watkins Glen International winner Jeff Gordon. No. 9 Marcos Ambrose (126.604 mph), No. 22 Kurt Busch, No. 99 Carl Edwards, No. 22 Brad Keselowski, No. 56 Martin Truex, Jr., No. 20 Joey Logano, No. 33 Clint Bowyer, No. 48 Jimmie Johnson, No. 31 Jeff Burton and No. 13 Casey Mears were all faster than the 124.580 mph of Gordon’s record. Defending race winner No. 42 Juan Pablo Montoya had the 15th fastest time in practice.
Qualifying for the 2011 Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips at The Glen will take place on Saturday, August 13 at 11:40am; two hours after the Nationwide Series cars qualify for the afternoon running of the Zippo 200.
Paul Menard, Elliott Sadler and Johnson had the fastest times in the final practice. Menard’s 122.115 mph was just three-tenths mph slower than Ambrose’s Nationwide Series track record set one year ago.
Ricky Taylor, driving the Daytona Prototype No. 10 SunTrust Racing Chevrolet Dallara, captured his sixth-consecutive pole position for a GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series event by setting the quick time in qualifying for Saturday evening’s Canadian Tire 200 at The Glen. Memo Rojas put the No. 01 Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sebates BMW Riley on the outside of the first row just 0.220 behind SunTrust. In the GT class, Robin Liddell put the No. 57 Stevenson Motorsports Camaro GTR on pole ahead of Joey Logano. The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series regular could have been on the pole except for a crash in the Turn 5 Carousel. The green flag for the Canadian Tire 200 at The Glen waves at 6:15pm.
Before the race, the GRAND-AM Fan Walk provides every fan in attendance the chance to get an up-close and personal look at the cars and stars of the Rolex Sports Car Series just moments before the green flag. The GRAND-AM Fan Walk will be open to any fan with a weekend ticket on Saturday, August 13, from 5:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
