WATKINS GLEN, NY – With a new NASCAR Nationwide Series track record of 1:11.567 (123.241 mph) Kurt Busch (No. 22 Ruby Tuesday/Discount Tire Dodge) edged out younger brother Kyle (No. 18 Z-Line Designs Toyota) for the pole position for Saturday’s 17th Annual Zippo 200 at Watkins Glen International. The two brothers were 0.358 and 0.200 seconds, respectively, faster than Carl Edwards (No. 60 Fastenal Ford). The top three qualifiers all beat the previous record set last year by Marcos Ambrose (1:12.053; 122.41 mph).
Five-time defending NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Champion Jimmie Johnson (No. 7 Jimmie Johnson’s Anything With an Engine Chevrolet), looking for his second career Nationwide win, will start sixth, behind road-course specialist Ron Fellows (No. 5 Canadian Tire Chevrolet).
NASCAR officials confirmed that the Nationwide Series race will start as planned even regardless of rain Saturday. There is a mere 40-percent chance of rain for the Zippo 200 in the afternoon and the Canadian Tire 200 GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series race at 6:00 p.m. Fans will be treated to plenty of racing, the only question is whether it will be in the wet or the dry. Many races at WGI have been held in the rain over the years, but it would be the first time ever a NASCAR race had been run in such conditions at The Glen. The green flag will fall on the Zippo 200 at 2:00 p.m. and will be followed by the Canadian Tire in the evening.
