WATKINS GLEN, NY – Last week, many residents in the Southern Tier of New York and Northern Tier of Pennsylvania had their homes damaged or destroyed following severe flooding. In response, Watkins Glen International along with the Watkins Glen Tops Friendly Markets donated a variety of items to support the Owego, NY community; an area hit particularly hard by these events. As was the case throughout the Twin Tiers, the substantial flooding was caused by heavy rains that fell in the region on September 7 and 8.
Full time WGI staff members Elizabeth Mayer (public relations manager) and Binghamton-area resident Rob Murphy (sales account executive) packed the Watkins Glen International show truck with goods from the Watkins Glen Tops store and then delivered a wide range of items to St. Patrick’s Church and School in Owego. Seeing the need, the duo joined in the efforts to hand deliver needed supplies to houses in the surrounding neighborhoods.
Among the items loaded in the back of the WGI Toyota Tundra show truck were bottles of shampoo and conditioner, bar soap, deodorant, hand sanitizer, toothpaste and toothbrushes as well as a variety of canned goods such as soup and pasta. In addition to the daily necessities, the delivery featured an assortment of cleaning supplies including surface cleaners and bleach as well paper products such as facial and toilet tissue and paper towels.
The residents in the affected areas are still recovering and in need in help due to the extensive damage caused to their homes and businesses. Fans are encouraged to contact their local United Way, Red Cross, food bank or flood relief collection point and do what they can to help support those in need following last week’s flooding.
