Watkins Glen International’s Season is Underway
Solid showing for Opening Weekend and Toyota Green Grand Prix
Thirty-three cars competed in the Doris Bovee Memorial Road Rally Friday and Saturday.
WATKINS GLEN, NY – Unfavorable weather found its way to Watkins Glen International during Opening Weekend benefiting JDRF. It did not stop hundreds of fans from capitalizing on their opportunity to take three paced laps behind an official WGI vehicle. Hundreds of cars full of fans including those from New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Ontario came to The Glen, helping to support JDRF.
“Watkins Glen International has done a fabulous job partnering with JDRF this year,” Mary Anne Fox, executive director of JDRF said. “We are working very hard to find a cure, the artificial pancreas is the next big advancement and all of the proceeds this weekend go to benefit JDRF.”
Fans enjoyed their first opportunity to see the three new grandstands that will be complete prior to Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen (June 29-July 1) as well as their final chance to purchase tickets at the advance sale price.
In addition to inviting fans to take to the track, The Glen welcomed the Toyota Green Grand Prix presented by Corning, Inc. for the second-consecutive season. Kent Johnson of Alfred State’s entry took the ACDC Excellence in Innovation for the best-combined results of the Doris Bovee Memorial SCCA Road Rallies. There were two segments for the first time with Mark Gonya placing first in each days’ portion on Friday and Saturday.
Johnson was first in the 51-65 mph class in Alfred State’s Honda Insight that averaged 95.1 mpg while the 1957 Heinkel 200 Microcar averaged a Grand Prix best of 130 mpg. Nine other drivers took home first-in-class honors including last year’s West Philadelphia High School with a Factory Five GTM/VW that averaged 92.5 mpg.
The only aspect of the event truly affected by the weather was the NYElectrathon which was cancelled on Saturday.
