GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge Teams Search for Speed at The Glen
Automatic Racing and Turner Motorsport prepare for Continental Tire 150 on June 30
WATKINS GLEN, NY – GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge teams Automatic Racing and Turner Motorsport spent Thursday at Watkins Glen International preparing for the Continental Tire 150, which will be held on Saturday of the Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen weekend June 29-July 1. The teams focused on performance during long runs and testing a number of off-season advancements.
Rob Ecklin, Jr., a graduate of Corning East, took advantage of track time at The Glen. “I know the track very well, but I am learning the car with this track, so the last two days have been better for me in terms of lap times,” he shared. Ecklin, Jr. plans to run six out of the 10 Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge races this season. He and Automatic Racing teammate Steve Phillips most recently finished 18th at New Jersey Motorsports Park behind the wheel of the No. 99 Invisible Glass BMW M3 Coupe.
Phillips emphasized the importance of track time despite potentially different conditions on race day, stating, “In the condition we are in right now, we are trying to determine how long the car will perform at the peak level and how many laps it will go at that level. We are trying to achieve the same result because you do not know what we are going to have on race day.”
Phillips believes the added track time can provide an edge in the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge, which he called “one of the most competitive racing series in the world with close times and tight racing.”
Michael Marsal reiterated that point during a break from on-track action. Marsal drives the No. 97 BMW M3 for Turner Motorsport while teammate Paul Dalla Lana drives the No. 96 BMW M3 with Bill Auberlen.
“Whoever comes best prepared, drives the best and has the best engineered car is going to win that race,” Marsal shared. “I think that doesn’t always hold true in every series. Here at Continental Tire, I think it really holds true, especially at these longer races like [the Continental Tire 150].”
