Legends of The Glen Induct Class of 2012
Bell, Hunt, and Pruett Honored for Contributions to Watkins Glen International
WATKINS GLEN, NY – Watkins Glen International announced the induction of three members to the Legends of The Glen. Derek Bell, James Hunt, and Scott Pruett will join a prestigious group of individuals who have made remarkable contributions to The Glen throughout their careers and played significant roles in the history of this legendary road course.
Derek Bell, described by fellow racer Hans-Joachim Stuck as one of the most liked drivers of his generation, first tasted victory at Watkins Glen International in 1975 at the Six Hours of The Glen race in his sixth trip to The Glen. Bell would return to Victory Lane at The Glen four more times from 1984 to 1986 including a IMSA sweep in 1985 in a Porsche 962. All told, Bell won at The Glen a total of six times in his career, boasting impressive career stats at the historic road course.
Former Formula 1 driver James Hunt won twice at The Glen, in 1976 and 1977, starting from the pole both years. Hunt boasts a string of five consecutive top-five finishes from 1973-77 and finished seventh in 1978.
Scott Pruett’s success at Watkins Glen International spans five racing series. Currently the co-driver of the No. 01 TELMEX BMW/Riley, his success in the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series includes a dozen podium finishes at The Glen. From 2008-10, Pruett dominated this historic road course with three-consecutive victories in the Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen. He has also raced in NASCAR, IMSA and SCCA events at Watkins Glen International during his career.
“I’m lost for words,” Pruett said. “This is truly incredible. It’s awesome. I’ve been coming up here for quite a few years. Watkins Glen is a great place to come and drive. I’m just overwhelmed with this award.”
&Pruett was inducted in front of local and regional media on Saturday at the Watkins Glen International Media Center during the Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series weekend. Watkins Glen International President Michael Printup presented Pruett with a hand-blown glass vase made by Vitrix Glass of Corning, NY at the ceremony.
