Watkins Glen International Selects Food Bank of the Southern Tier as Opening Weekend Benefactor
WATKINS GLEN, NY – Proceeds from fans attending Opening Weekend at Watkins Glen International, April 20-21, will support The Food Bank of the Southern Tier. For a $25 donation fans of The Glen can drive the legendary road course in their personal vehicle during this annual tradition acknowledging the start of the season.
This is also the last opportunity for fans to purchase advance-priced tickets to all of The Glen’s 2013 race events. After April 21 ticket prices are set to increase.
“The Food Bank is thrilled to be the beneficiary of WGI’s opening weekend celebration,” said Natasha Thompson, Food Bank President and CEO. “We sincerely thank WGI and their fans for their generous support of our work to build and sustain hunger free communities throughout the Southern Tier.”
Over 11,000 individuals visit a hunger-relief member agency served by the Food Bank of the Southern Tier. In 2012, the Food Bank distributed over 7.8 million pounds of food to neighbors in need across the six Southern Tier counties Broome, Chemung, Steuben, Tioga, Tompkins and Watkins Glen International’s own Schuyler.
“This is an outstanding opportunity to continue The Glen’s support of our neighbors and the Southern Tier region that supports us,” Michael Printup said. “Selecting the Food Bank of the Southern Tier is an ideal match in capitalizing on our Opening Weekend tradition, starting our summer and helping our friends.”
Tickets for Opening Weekend are available at the Watkins Glen International gate on Saturday and Sunday only. Gates open at 9:30 a.m. with the first laps starting at 10 a.m. On Friday, April 19, the Toyota Green Grand Prix returns to The Glen, with admission at no-charge for fans interested in witnessing this fuel-efficiency competition.
