Golden Knights go Airborne for Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen
Army’s Golden Knights to perform as part of WGI’s pre-race ceremonies
Formed in 1959 and officially recognized, designated and activated as the U.S. Army Parachute Team in 1961, the Golden Knights have built an impressive competition record of 427 national championships along with 81 world championships, 20 national and 10 world team titles.
WATKINS GLEN, NY (June 26, 2014) – The pre-race ceremonies for this weekend’s Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen are sure to be memorable as Watkins Glen International adds the Army’s Golden Knights to the patriotic themed ceremonies. The Strategic Army Corp Sport Parachute Team (STRAC), will be performing their award winning aerial acrobatics as they parachute onto the historic road course as part of Sunday’s pre-race ceremonies.
Formed in 1959 and officially recognized, designated and activated as the U.S. Army Parachute Team in 1961, the Golden Knights have built an impressive competition record of 427 national championships along with 81 world championships, 20 national and 10 world team titles. Performing more than 27,000 jumps annually, the Golden Knights live by three-fold mission; “To perform aerial demonstrations to public and assist the U.S. Army in its Strategic Outreach Program, to compete in national and international parachuting competitions and test and evaluate new parachuting equipment and techniques for improved operation and safety.”
Stationed at the home of the Airborne, Fort Bragg, N.C., the Golden Knights are composed of seven sections; two demonstration teams, the Black and Gold demonstration teams, two competition teams, Formation Skydiving Team, Style and Accuracy Team, Tandem section, the Aviation detachment, and a Headquarters detachment.
