Learn about RSS News Feeds
What is an RSS feed?
An RSS feed (also known as a news feed) is a listing of a website’s content. It is updated whenever new content is published to a site such as TheGlen.com. News readers “subscribe” to RSS feeds, which mean they download lists of stories and present them to you in your news reader. An RSS feed might contain a list of story headlines, a list of excerpts from the stories, or a list containing each story from the website. All RSS feeds will have a link back to the website, so if you see a headline/excerpt/story you like, you can click on the link for that piece of content and will be taken to the website to read it.
What does RSS stand for?
RSS is an acronym for Really Simple Syndication and Rich Site Summary.
How are feeds used?
Initially RSS feeds were intended for news headlines. The usage has expanded to include forum headlines, new auction listings, updated listings of houses for sale, and a number of other uses. Go here for additional uses for RSS feeds. Currently the RSS feed on TheGlen.com is programmed to provide updates on any news articles added to the website.
How do I read a feed?
Feeds can be viewed either online using a site like My Yahoo!, Google, or by downloading feed reading software. Additional readers can be found by entering “news aggregator” or “RSS news reader” into your favorite search engine.
What is the difference between news aggregators and feed readers?
RSS feed readers and news aggregators are essentially the same thing; both allow for viewing RSS feeds. News aggregators are designed specifically to view news related feeds but technically they can read any feeds.
Why should I use a news reader/aggregator?
If you visit a lot of websites on a daily basis, or read a lot of blogs, a news reader can save you a lot of time. Sites like TheGlen.com, ESPN.com, and ABCNews.com all have syndicated feeds.
Using a news reader to consume your web media means that you only need to visit a website when you read a story in your news reader that is of interest to you. You won’t have to visit many sites multiple times every day to see if there are updates; your news reader will do that for you and will let you know when there is a new story to be read!
So if you visit a lot of websites regularly, or want to be alerted automatically when your websites publish a news story, using a new reader might make sense.
