The Busch brothers lead every lap of the 17th Annual Zippo 200 at The Glen, with the elder Kurt (No. 22 Ruby Tuesday/Discount Tire Dodge), taking the win ahead of Jimmie Johnson (No. 7 Jimmie Johnson’s Anything with an Engine Chevrolet) and Joey Logano (No. 20 GameStop Toyota). The brothers swapped the lead six times, with the younger Kyle No. 18 Z-Line Designs Toyota) leading four times for 48 of the 85 laps.

Busch Brothers Take Front Row for Zippo 200

With a new NASCAR Nationwide Series track record of 1:11.567 (123.241 mph) Kurt Busch (No. 22 Ruby Tuesday/Discount Tire Dodge) edged out younger brother Kyle (No. 18 Z-Line Designs Toyota) for the pole position for Saturday’s 17th Annual Zippo 200 at Watkins Glen International. The two brothers were 0.358 and 0.200 seconds, respectively, faster than Carl Edwards (No. 60 Fastenal Ford). The top three qualifiers all beat the previous record set last year by Marcos Ambrose (1:12.053; 122.41 mph).

Watkins Glen International Qualifying Record May Fall

The top 10 drivers in final practice for the Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips at The Glen smashed the track qualifying record set back in 2003 by four-time Watkins Glen International winner Jeff Gordon. No. 9 Marcos Ambrose (126.604 mph), No. 22 Kurt Busch, No. 99 Carl Edwards, No. 22 Brad Keselowski, No. 56 Martin Truex, Jr., No. 20 Joey Logano, No. 33 Clint Bowyer, No. 48 Jimmie Johnson, No. 31 Jeff Burton and No. 13 Casey Mears were all faster than the 124.580 mph of Gordon’s record. Defending race winner No. 42 Juan Pablo Montoya had the 15th fastest time in practice.

Kyle Busch Takes Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips at The Glen Pole in Record Time

Fastest of the fast today was Kyle Busch, whose 1:09.767 (126.421 mph) lap was over one second faster than Jeff Gordon’s 1:10.798 (124.580 mph). The 2003 track record set by Gordon was destroyed today by no less than 15 drivers during qualifying for Sunday’s 2011 Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips at The Glen.

Kyle Busch, who also clocked a speed faster than the record, will join Montoya on the front row for the start of the Finger Lakes 355 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race on Sunday, August 12.

Four-time Watkins Glen International race winner Jeff Gordon returned to winning form, capturing the pole for Sunday’s Cheez-It™ 355 at The Glen with record-breaking speed. Gordon, driver the No. 24 Driver to End Hunger Chevrolet, broke the track record on Saturday with a lap of 129.466 mph (68.126 seconds).
