Boris Said

Wednesday, July 18, 2007

Said won the 2006 Sahlen's Six Hours of The Glen and his supporters, the famed "Said Heads", are some of the most passionate fans in racing.

Boris_Said

Jul 18, 2007 7:19:00 PM

Boris is now here and since we have several people we will get started so please start submitting your questions. They will appear when Boris answers them. Thanks for joining!

KC

Jul 18, 2007 7:19:50 PM

Hi Boris, This is your most devoted fan here in AR. Any news on new sponsorships for the rest of the year??
Boris_Said
No. We had our meeting with Pepsi this week and we are still trying to get things done for next year. Nothing new yet for this year. A lot of people are kicking tires but our Cup teams are down to Watkins Glen and Talladega.

Diane

Jul 18, 2007 7:20:34 PM

Hey Boris, I've been to your K1Speed Karting place in Irvine several times and its a blast! I want to know if you are going to be running any more Busch races for Evernham? Will it just be Montreal?
Boris_Said
Montreal and Watkins Glen. We are opening a new track next to Ontario Mills Mall next week.
Thanks for coming to the track by the way.

DavidRFuller

Jul 18, 2007 7:21:20 PM

Hey Boris, If you could change one thing about NASCAR, what would it be?
Boris_Said
The top 35 qualifying rule. I think it should be the top 40 based on speed and 3 provisionals. This would make it a lot more fair for everybody.

dsapoff

Jul 18, 2007 7:22:00 PM

With all the different series that you have driven in, do you have any plans to race in the NCTS?
Boris_Said
I've never said no to any ride offer so if anyone offers one I'll be up for one.

Saidhead Michelle

Jul 18, 2007 7:22:52 PM

Hi Boris-- your thoughts on Nascar qualifying after the Daytona rainout?
Boris_Said
I was definitely disappointed when it rained. I knew the rules going in and I knew rain was possible. Rules are rules and they're totally fair. We had a real fast race car so it was disappointing.

KC

Jul 18, 2007 7:23:35 PM

Will you be driving the Gold No Fear car at the Glen? Love that paint scheme.
Boris_Said
No, this year we will drive the black and red. Just like when we drove at Infineon and Daytona. The gold car is sitting on display at the K1Speed track.

dsapoff

Jul 18, 2007 7:23:53 PM

I was at the Glen for the Rolex race last year and want to thank you for the autograph and the chat that we had.
Boris_Said

Anytime.

Saidhead Michelle

Jul 18, 2007 7:24:51 PM

Hi Boris. Do you have a favorite track to race at?
Boris_Said
Yes, two of them. One is the old Nurburing and two is Watkins Glen.

Diane

Jul 18, 2007 7:25:30 PM

Any plans to race in Europe in the near future?
Boris_Said
No not right now. Not until next year. Probably the 24 Hours at the Nurburing ring again.

dsapoff

Jul 18, 2007 7:25:48 PM

Are you planning to race the Busch series in Canada?
Boris_Said
Yes. That's my next race and I can't wait.

KC

Jul 18, 2007 7:26:55 PM

The way things are going for Ginn right now, I'll bet they wished that they had offered you a full time ride when you were on the payroll.
Boris_Said
I think they have pretty good drivers but I would have loved to have a full time ride there. Jay Frye is still a good friend of mine and I wish them all the best but if I had gone with them I wouldn't have been able to start my own team and find out how tough that is

dsapoff

Jul 18, 2007 7:27:23 PM

Being in the military, the Nurburing is a great race track. I was there in 1999 and 2000. When was the last time you raced there?
Boris_Said
2005 when I won becoming the 1st American to win the 24 Hour race.

Downforce

Jul 18, 2007 7:27:43 PM

Boris, have you raced or tested at the Montreal circuit?
Boris_Said
No. I've only been there 6 years ago to watch a Formula 1 race.

DavidRFuller

Jul 18, 2007 7:28:26 PM

So Boris- how long have you had the 'fro? By the way I want to thank you for coming up to the pit lane paddock at the Glen last year and signing autographs during Cup qualifying. You were the only driver to do so.
Boris_Said
I have had the fro since the day I came out I think. The only reason I know that is because my son came out with a fro when he was born.

Saidhead Michelle

Jul 18, 2007 7:28:37 PM

would you consider joining an established NASCAR team if they offered a full time ride?
Boris_Said
Yes.

Saidhead Michelle

Jul 18, 2007 7:30:07 PM

any particular NASCAR team your preference?
Boris_Said
Well I would probably take a full ride with anyone that offered it. If I had my choice I would have to say DEI, Roush, Gibbs, really anyone. It's really hard competing when you only race a few times a year.

Diane

Jul 18, 2007 7:30:52 PM

Do you find that sponsorship is more scarce if you're not in your 20's?
Boris_Said
Yes. I've heard it from Ray Evernham that I would be a zillionaire by now if I was 20 years younger because everyone would want me. I still think it's there though.

Downforce

Jul 18, 2007 7:31:42 PM

Boris, it's always easy to spot you at a driver's meeting, with the hairdo and your stature. Have you ever managed to fold yourself into an open-wheel/formula car?
Boris_Said
No. Unfortunately it just doesn't seem possible. I think the champ cars are big enough now but the opportunity hasn't come up. I would try it if anyone asked.

dsapoff

Jul 18, 2007 7:32:11 PM

What one team in NASCAR would you most like to drive for full time?
Boris_Said
I guess Roush, Hendrick then DEI would be my top 3 choices.

Cindy

Jul 18, 2007 7:32:53 PM

Sorry about Daytona. Mother Nature wasn't your friend that day. What hobbies/activities outside of racing do you have to help relieve the stresses of Mother Nature and everyday life?
Boris_Said
Playing with my little kid is #1, then golfing is #2 and riding dirt bikes is #3.

KC

Jul 18, 2007 7:33:27 PM

are you currently doing any more testing for other teams like you did for McMurray? What about preparing other teams for Montreal and the Glen?
Boris_Said
Not really working with other teams other than Ray Evernham Racing. Just really helping other drivers.

dsapoff

Jul 18, 2007 7:34:20 PM

What do you do during the off season? Any favorite hobbies?
Boris_Said
Golf and motocross but I don't really have an off-season. I have a full time job with No Fear, we have 4 go kart tracks to run and we're trying to open a BMW dealership.

Cindy

Jul 18, 2007 7:35:29 PM

Have any pending sponsorship deals you'd like to share? Really would like to see you in more rides. Looking forward to seeing you at Watkins!
Boris_Said
We're working everyday to try and find a new sponsor but nothing on the horizon. We're working on Pepsi to get more involved and go full time to go head to head with Red Bull. We think No Fear should be a full sponsor and it is owned by Pepsi.
Oh yeah. Before that I had never been to Europe. Probably the time I spent with Callaway in Europe, Japan and China was really a highlight of my year. For a kid from Connecticut that had never been anywhere it was really exciting. Definitely realized how good we have it in America.

pat-o

Jul 18, 2007 7:37:27 PM

What's your NASCAR schedule for the remainder of the series? Are you going to do any more races other then Watkins Glen and Talladega? What about any Busch races?
Boris_Said
No. Watkins Glen and Talladega are the only Busch races. I might run at New Hampshire with another team and not my own.

KC

Jul 18, 2007 7:38:46 PM

Have you ever raced on dirt?
Boris_Said
I raced a quarter race in a Nissan Titan which was a ton of fun and last year I did the Baha 1000. I am going to do the X-Games in LA on August 5th which is the day after Montreal.
My dad actually was a racer but he left home when I was 4 so I didn't know he was a racer until I got into racing. I got into racing when I went to my first car race when I was 24. Got the bug then.

DavidRFuller

Jul 18, 2007 7:40:12 PM

If a company offered to sponsor the 60 full time with you as the driver would you run the whole schedule in Cup? Give a call to all the Forbes 500 companies! You would think at least one would do it!
Boris_Said
For sure we would and that's what we're trying to do. It's just hard right now which is obvious when you also see a team like Ginn having a hard time.
Yes thank you.

Saidhead Michelle

Jul 18, 2007 7:40:47 PM

did it surprise you that Montoya won at Infineon?
Boris_Said
Yes. Cause he didn't have a fast car all weekend. They just got lucky with the fuel mileage.

Gary The Happy Pirate

Jul 18, 2007 7:40:53 PM

What is your golf handicap?
Boris_Said
6

Downforce

Jul 18, 2007 7:42:06 PM

Speaking of BMW, do you still have a contract/relationship with them? Always enjoyed watching you in the PTG and Turner cars.
Boris_Said

I don't actually have a contract with the factory but I do run some BMW cars in the Grand-Am Cup Series which is a great series. The team is called Kinetic Racing and the car sponsor is Said Head Performance.

Gary The Happy Pirate

Jul 18, 2007 7:43:01 PM

What is your favorite course to drive and your most challenging if the two are not one in the same?
Boris_Said
The answer for both is definitely Nurburing. It's 15 miles around, 186 turns and they start 230 cars. The cars, rain and weather makes it very challenging. But in the states it's Watkins Glen for sure.

dsapoff

Jul 18, 2007 7:43:19 PM

Do you currently do any driving on hometown short tracks?
Boris_Said
Nope. I've actually never been on a hometown short track.

Downforce

Jul 18, 2007 7:44:28 PM

What are your impressions of the Car of Tomorrow so far, and how does it compare to the old cars? Did you have any input with the development of the road course version?
Boris_Said
I had a lot of input on the version that Roush built because I drove it. I like it a lot because of the size. It drives quite a bit different than the old car but I think as we keep working on the COT it will get better because it really is a great race car.

saidheaddeb

Jul 18, 2007 7:45:18 PM

How would you compare Infineon to Watkins Glen?
Boris_Said
Infineon is a much more technical track that requires more finesse on the petal. You can be a lot more aggressive at Watkins Glen, it's a lot higher speed and you have to be really good on the brakes there.

KC

Jul 18, 2007 7:46:05 PM

Cool. Maybe you can do the Eldora race next year for Tony.
Boris_Said
I want to do it and Tony said he would invite me this year. I couldn't do it this year because I was working with Scott Riggs at Road Atlanta testing. I watched it on pay-per-view and it looked like a blast.

Duane

Jul 18, 2007 7:46:57 PM

What do you think about Bernie E. and his feeling that he doesn't care if F1 is in the US?
Boris_Said
If he doesn't care I don't think we should either. I think for the most part it's boring. It's nothing like Grand-Am Rolex or NASCAR. I think he's wrong and that it should be in the US. We are the biggest car purchasing country in the world. Indy was a great location but the racing was a little boring.

Gary The Happy Pirate

Jul 18, 2007 7:47:32 PM

If they ever made a movie about your life and its accomplishments, what celeb would you want to play your role?
Boris_Said
I would want Chris Farley because he was really funny and really cool. Living it would have to be Adam Sandler.

Downforce

Jul 18, 2007 7:48:42 PM

What are you driving at the X-Games, a WRC/rally car? Have you practiced in them, your impressions?
Boris_Said
I'm driving a Subaru. I've never seen it or sat in it so I will get into it for the 1st time on the day of the race. I drive a Ford Escort Cosworth RS which I imported so hopefully that will be similar.

Duane

Jul 18, 2007 7:49:01 PM

What event are you going to be in at the X games?
Boris_Said
I think they just call it the X-Games Ralley
I appreciate the fans because I keep saying if they buy more cases that we'll do more races and it's working. Pepsi is taking notice.

west is the best

Jul 18, 2007 7:50:20 PM

boris, you're the best, are you taking any vacations this summer?

Boris_Said

No, not this summer. I usually take my vacation on Thanksgiving Day and take my family somewhere for 5 or 6 days.

Cindy

Jul 18, 2007 7:50:56 PM

Any plans for starting an official Boris Said web site? The No Fear site isn't exactly updated frequently. Need a web master? :)
Boris_Said
We actually just started talking about it so maybe yes

KC

Jul 18, 2007 7:51:28 PM

Never been on a short track...Evernham needs to let you run Memphis in October.
Boris_Said
Yes that would be nice but I think they got a new guy, Chase Miller, and I'm sure they'll have him racing there. He's a good driver.

Downforce

Jul 18, 2007 7:52:15 PM

If IROC was somehow brought back as a clean slate, what type of cars and tracks would you like to see in the series?
Boris_Said
For sure you have to have tracks like Daytona and Talladega. For sure as many road courses that they allow like Watkins Glen and Infineon. Then also the short tracks like Bristol because they are always fun to watch.

Gary The Happy Pirate

Jul 18, 2007 7:52:47 PM

God forbid anything serious happened to a driver, but if you could take over a car for one of the fulltime drivers, who would it be and why?
Boris_Said
Dale Jr. Just because I think it would be pretty cool to run for DEI and for a team the Dale Sr. started.

dsapoff

Jul 18, 2007 7:53:27 PM

How hard is it from track to track to set up a car with the correct fuel cell?
Boris_Said
The fuel cell doesn't have a lot to do with the set up. Every track is different so you have to keep working on it all the time.
And a perfect car is very rare.

DavidRFuller

Jul 18, 2007 7:54:27 PM

I do a NASCAR video game on my computer. Sonoma is the one track I have a hard time getting around consistently. Is there a quick tip you could give me?
Boris_Said
Not on video games because every time I race on a video game I can barely make it around. My 10 yr old neighbor beats me every time.

Downforce

Jul 18, 2007 7:54:57 PM

I don't have a personal website yet. We're still looking at it.

Cindy

Jul 18, 2007 7:55:40 PM

Ever gonna wear a tie on NASCAR Now? :) Thought I heard there was a bet that if you wore a tie, some money would go to charity? Good job on that show, by the way!
Boris_Said
If I can help it I never want to wear a tie in my whole lift and as of right now I am the only person ever on ESPN to never wear a tie so I don't want to stop my streak. Plus I don't even know how to tie a tie.

saidheaddeb

Who are your favorite drivers (not just NASCAR)?
Boris_Said
Sabastian Lobe, Michael Shuemaker and Dale Jr

Gary The Happy Pirate

What is your favorite team/driver to race against and why?
Boris_Said
For me it's anybody in the top level of NASCAR because if you beat them you really feel like you've accomplished something. Dale Jr, Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, etc, etc, etc.

Downforce

My favorite food is pasta or pizza and iced tea. My least favorite is fish and scotch.

Downforce

Jul 18, 2007 7:58:59 PM

That Cosworth RS is super cool. Do you have any other interesting rides, like 2 wheelers or your old race cars?
Boris_Said
I have a 1989 Camero that I won 3 national championships in SCCA racing. I have my road race car from last year and my Pepsi 400 pole winning car from last year which I will keep for the rest of my life.

Jul 18, 2007 7:59:20 PM

Hi Boris! Proud Saidhead here :)! I know that you and Boris Jr. go to Legoland a lot, what else do you do in your down time?
Boris_Said
I take Jr to the go-kart track, the driving range and mostly he just likes to play in the dirt with a shovel.

Gary The Happy Pirate

Jul 18, 2007 7:59:44 PM

If drastic changes were made, would you support F1's return to The Glen?
Boris_Said
Oh yeah. I think F1 needs to be at The Glen and be on a real track.

KC

Jul 18, 2007 8:00:12 PM

We are drinking the cases and writing letters. Wearing the Said Head Performance tees...and wigs when we get a chance. Anything else your fan base can do? And when will the Boris bobbleheads be out??
Boris_Said
They can keep writing letters to Pepsi telling them to sponsor us. You never know, there might be bobbleheads next season.

Downforce

Jul 18, 2007 8:01:00 PM

Boris, when you actually win a Nextel Cup race, have you planned anything special, like shaving your head or running around the track naked? Ha
Boris_Said
I would never run around the track naked but I do have a bet with everyone at ESPN that I would save my head if I ever win a Cup race and I would make good on that. I would also set up the biggest party at the Seneca Lodge if I won at Watkins Glen.

dsapoff

How big would your celebration be after the race if you were to win at Watkins Glen?

I don't know how big it could be but it would be as big as it could get and it would go all night at the Seneca Lodge. Might happen anyway even if we don't win.

saidhead30

Jul 18, 2007 8:05:48 PM

I'll be rooting for you and all the so-called "road course ringers" at the Glen and Montreal. Good luck!

Thank you.

What's more challenging, road courses or oval?
Boris_Said
For me ovals just because I don't have the experience like I do on the road courses. But they are all challenging.

Why doesn't NASCAR use the "boot" during the cup and Busch races?
Boris_Said
I don't know but I sure would like it.

I unfortunately need to get going. I really appreciate all of the support I've been getting from the fans and thanks for showing up here. Please keep buying the cases so we can run more races. Thank you again and we will see you at The Glen.
