Dale Earnhardt earned his 'Intimidator' nickname by handing out some lickings on the race track, but he could take one, too, as he proved in 1996. Earnhardt couldn't breathe or raise his right arm as NASCAR's premier series headed to the road course in New York. He had been in a hard wreck at Talladega two weeks earlier, suffering a dislocated sternum and broken collarbone. Earnhardt stayed in the car for the whole race on Aug. 11, 1996, despite Jeff Green standing by in case he needed or wanted relief. The No. 3 finished sixth. After finishing the 220.5-mile race, Earnhardt said, 'It hurts. But it's a good hurt.'

His boss, Dale Earnhardt, may have left him stranded at the track, but Steve Park was happy to find another way home. Park had just won the road course race after a 15.4-second pit stop for fuel and tires and successfully battling Mark Martin on the final lap. He was ready to celebrate his first Winston Cup win -- and did so on top of his car on the frontstretch. Park poses here in Victory Lane.

In one of the scariest incidents at Watkins Glen International, a chain reaction led to the No. 00 of David Reutimann spinning on its roof across the track before the remaining hulk of his car landed along the outside of the second turn on the final lap. It wasn't until Tony Stewart spun out and hit the end of the pit road barrier a few turns later that the yellow flag was thrown, giving Marcos Ambrose the win.
