WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (June 8, 2020) — The seniors of Watkins Glen High School received a unique experience to end the academic year by taking three laps around the famed 3.4-mile road course Saturday at Watkins Glen International.

“I think it’s really special,” Watkins Glen International President Michael Printup said. “Speaking with Superintendent Greg Callahan, it’s just focusing in on the kids and what they’re missing this year, and how to give them something special that no one else will ever get. We’re part of this community and the school is obviously a big part of this community. I just think it’s the memory that the kids will have.”

In addition to the laps, the students received a senior t-shirt and a letter they wrote to themselves Freshman year at the start-finish line.

“It’s such a loss of all of the things that we can’t do but we did a memory video earlier and I told the kids I said, these are all of the great memories you’ve already had. It’s too bad that we didn’t have as many as we wanted, but we’re going to try and give you more of these celebrations and activities that we’re doing,” said Watkins Glen Senior Advisor, Sam Brubaker.

“It’s definitely a once in a lifetime thing,” added Principal Kai D’Alleva. “I’ve been here for 6 years, I started with these guys when they were 7th graders so it means a lot to me to see them accomplishing a lot, and to see them doing something that we’ve never done before despite this terrible situation that we’re all in, and ultimately we want them to look back on this and really remember that we’re thinking about them, we care about them, and we want to make this as special as we possibly can.”
